Scuderia Hanseat — liability and insurance on the Nordschleife.

This page is addressed exclusively to participants of the Scuderia Hanseat. It clarifies which risks actually exist under the current model, what changes with the transition in autumn, and how the new insurance solution operates.

No sales. No marketing. Only the information every participant should understand before putting on the helmet.

§ 01

Current model (spring)

How the waiver of liability works today.

Between participating drivers there is a mutual waiver of liability. Each participant declares in advance not to assert claims against another participant for damage arising in connection with the event.

Purpose: avoid disputes between drivers. No one should end up in a legal dispute with another participant after an incident.

Consequence: where there is no liability, no liability insurance applies either. Each loss stays where it occurred — with the affected vehicle.

Example · Rear-end collision
Situation
Driver B runs into the back of driver A.
Legal
No claim by A against B (waiver of liability).
Insurance
No payment — neither from B's liability insurer nor (as a rule) from A's comprehensive cover.
Result
A bears the damage to their vehicle. B bears the damage to their vehicle. In full.

The risks described here rest on the general mechanics of insurance on the racetrack.

§ 02

Reality check

What the waiver achieves — and what it does not.

A waiver of liability protects against claims — not against losses."

The waiver governs the relationship between drivers. It prevents proceedings. It does not prevent dented bodywork, engine damage or any repair bill.

  • No liability  →  no payment by the other party's insurer.
  • Insurance only applies where liability exists or where one's own policy expressly covers the case.
  • Comprehensive cover excludes driving on the Nordschleife and comparable tracks in most cases.

Why a waiver of liability is often misunderstood is one of the key myths on the racetrack.

§ 03

New model (autumn)

What fundamentally changes.

From autumn, liability between participants will be permitted again. The blanket mutual waiver no longer applies.

This is not a cosmetic detail. It changes the system: anyone who causes a loss is liable to the injured party. For the first time again, there is a connecting point at which an insurer can pay.

Key point

No liability, no cover. With liability, cover becomes possible in the first place.

§ 04

New insurance solution

What is concretely covered.

For damage between participants a cover of up to €400,000 is provided. It applies in the typical situations where today everyone is left with their own damage:

S1
Braking error

Misjudgement of the braking point, running into the car ahead.

S2
Rear-end collision

Classic rear-end damage in the group or at the end of the track.

S3
Loss of fluids

Oil or coolant loss from one vehicle causes the accident of a following driver.

The specific terms of the policy are decisive in each case. The scenarios listed describe the scope of application, not the contractual wording.

§ 05

Why this matters

Economic background.

  • Repair costs for vehicles in this class are high — five-figure amounts are the rule, not the exception.
  • Comprehensive cover usually does not pay for own damage on the track.
  • Without the new solution, each participant carries the full risk alone.
  • With the new cover, the financial risk becomes calculable — not zero, but defined.
§ 06

Closing

Racetrack remains a risk — but no longer an incalculable one."

This briefing does not replace individual legal advice. It is intended to allow Scuderia Hanseat participants to understand the current and the upcoming model before the season.
